They called Suibhne mad

because he preferred

the bugling of the Red Deer

to the sounds of the horn

and the hunt

and fled the company

of his fellow men

for a forest

then so vast

he could leap

from tree to tree.

One footstep

on his wild road

and you too

will find

madness,

or poetry,

or death.

The art lies

in resolving

madness

into poetry

to forestall death.

Dream enough

of the Roebuck

and the robeless king

and you will find yourself

wandering down

an bóthar fiáin,

not noticing

when the path

gives way to a Deer trail

and then the opening

created by the way

roots follow

underground streams

until you kneel down

among the Alders

at the water's edge,

digging Calamus

the fire of its root

lighting the fire at your root

and the fire in your heart

and the fire in your head

which spill forth

from your lips

as you join

in the song

of the Blackbirds

calling the world

to flower

and fruit

and seed

once more.
